Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate and sometimes the area around it, associated to bacterial infection. There are four types of prostatitis: chronic, acute bacterial, chronic bacterial and asymptomatic inflammatory. How the prostate becomes infected is not clear. The bacteria that cause prostatitis may get into the prostate from the urethra by backward flow of infected urine or stool from the rectum.
An individual might not have any symptoms of prostatitis or symptoms so sudden and severe that you seek emergency medical care. The prostate may swell, causing a less forceful urine stream. Sometimes blood in the urine and painful ejaculation are other symptoms of prostatitis.
Other symptoms can include:
- Frequent urination
- Difficulty urinating
- Pain or burning during urination
- Chills and fever
The correct diagnosis is very important because the treatment is different for the different types of prostatitis syndromes. In addition, it is extremely important to make sure the symptoms are not from other conditions such as urethritis, cystitis, an enlarged prostate or cancer.
